Woven Market Basket Leather Handles

This large panier (French for basket) is handmade by farmers in Morocco using traditional methods. They are hand woven from strips of fallen palm fronds which are then sewn together in rounds.

Sturdy leather handles are made from goat, cow or camel hide, also a sustainable by-product, which would otherwise go to waste. These baskets provide the farmers with an income during the winter when there are no crops

Each basket is unique, no two are quite the same so these measurements are only a rough guideline. It is 60cm in height, 46cm dia across the top, 32cm dia base and the handle length 26cm.

The ultimate sustainable shopper, it is stylish, light-weight but strong and ideal for food shopping, the beach and/or storage.

What it replaces & why we love it

160,000 plastics bags are used globally every second. A trillion plastic bags are used globally every year. Only 3% of plastic bags are recycled. The great pacific garbage patch is a floating land-fill of garbage in the Pacific, twice the size of Texas and is mostly composed of plastic. Over one hundred thousand marine mammals are killed every year due to plastic in the ocean.

Easy to use, versatile, a great size – really handy for Farmer’s Markets! I also like that it provides income for people in their off-season, turning scraps into a reusable and stylish product for all occasions.

Materials

• Palm fronds – dead palm fronds which have fallen from the tree
• Leather - Sturdy leather handles are from goat, cow or camel hide, a sustainable by-product which would otherwise go to waste
• Plastic strapping - repurposing plastic strapping throughout the basket to reinforce the weave and provide extra strength and durability

Care

As with most things, being gentle with your items makes them last longer. This is light weight but strong, but don’t be too rough with it. Make sure you don’t fold it or store it in damp places. When not in use, we keep it by the door to store our other reusables, so they are always on hand.

End of life

We hope this basket lasts a very long time, but if you no longer use it, you can try repurposing it into garage storage, a toy basket or using it as a pot plant cover.

At the end of its life, you can compost it at home by first removing the green plastic strapping that is inside the weave – check with your local council to see if these can be recycled locally. Along with the palm fronds, the leather straps can be home composted.

These beautiful hand-crafted baskets come with a craft card swing tag with natural string and a small metal eyelet.

How they come packaged to us

These baskets are delivered to us are in a reusable or recyclable cardboard box with cello tape. We have kept the box to store our stock and once we have sold out we will reuse it or recycle it.
